I did a lot of research on these — YouTube reviews, forums, the lot. I even ended up cornering random people in carparks who had AT tyres on their rigs. The decider was a mate who’s run Maxxis Razr ATs across the Great Central Road and up to Broome and reckoned they didn’t miss a beat. Good enough for me.
I went with the LT (light truck) rating for the stronger sidewalls — out bush, the side of a tyre is what finds the sharp rock you didn’t see. Sized them up to 275/70R17 LT, a bit taller than standard for a touch more ground clearance.
So far they’ve been on beach, dunes, and a good stretch of dirt road. No complaints yet. Whether they really earn their keep is a question for the Leonora trip — though if my carpark research is anything to go by, I’m in solid company.
